Description
Trek Duration: 4 Night/5 Days
Maximum Altitude: 4590 m
Route: Manali - Pirni - Chikka - Hampta Pass - Chattru - Kunzum La - Chandertaal - Rohtang Pass - Manali.
Lahaul and Kullu are two adjoining districts and are separated by Rohtang La. It is snow bound from October to June. Both the valleys are geographically quite different. The Kullu/Manali valleys are green with thick forest cover and heavy rains. However, Lahaul is in a rain-shadow area with partial Trans-Himalayan barrenness. The trail to Chandertaal over Hampta Pass combines both these areas gives a wonderful walk with two completely different terrains to enjoy.
The Hampta Pass trek is ideal as a point of initiation in to the world of trekking. As we trek on this trail, we will cross a high pass, dark pine forests, lush green meadows to glacial valleys and stunning views. Ideal time to go on this trek is early June to late October. The path was also the ancient trade route between the Kullu and Lahaul Valley. We will head on to Chikka and cross the villages of Sethan and Hampta en route. The valley is thick and closed. Forested slopes are visible to the east of Chikka, surmountable after 3 to 4 hrs of scrambling. We can see Deo Tibba and Indrasan group of peaks.
After Chikka, we will head on to Balu ka Ghera and will cross Juara on the way. Ratni Thach is where we will set up camp. After crossing over the Hampta Pass, we will arrive at our next camping spot – Shiya Goru. From here it is a short walk to Chatru, from where we will drive to Chandertaal and camp a short distance away from the lake. This is a common practice amongst campers and trekkers so as to maintain the sanctity of the lake.
The next morning, we will start our drive through Spiti back to Manali.
