Full description

Day 1. Arrive at the old mining town of Pinal de Amoles, nestled high among the mountains, full of colourful balconies and winding streets. From there, you'll be taken to the starting point for your hike up to Cuatro Palos, the breathtaking lookout atop Cerro de la Media Luna (Halfmoon hill). After lunch, travel to the El Chuvejé waterfall, a nearly-30-metre drop into crystal-clear rock pools, perfect for paddling in on a warm day. Then you’re on to the heart of the Sierra Gorda – the historic town of Jalpan, where you’ll catch your first glimpse of one of the region’s five World Heritage-listed Franciscan Missions. Day 2. Start your morning with breakfast at a local fonda before travelling to Las Adjuntas, where you’ll begin your riverside walk before arriving at the lookout where you’ll get to see some of the region’s water birds. Afterwards, you’ll travel to the La Casita Ecológica, where you’ll enjoy a hearty organic lunch. Day 3. A quick coffee and pastry will help fuel your early start to the morning, setting out towards the “Cave of Swallows” (Sótano de las Golondrinas), a spectacular vertical cave, featuring a more than 300 metre drop. You’ll have earned your breakfast at Fonda Aquismón, before driving on to Xilitla, where you’ll step into the magic and madness of Las Pozas, the lush surrealist sculpture gardens created by the late Sir Edward James. After exploring the stories-high monuments, rock pools and waterfalls of Las Pozas, you’ll break for lunch in the Xilitla township, before travelling to the old growth forests of La Trinidad. After settling into your ecocabins, there’ll be time for a short hike to watch the sun set over the mountains before enjoying a traditional Huastecan dinner. Day 4. Breakfast in the beautiful surrounds of La Trinidad before beginning your morning hike to one of the region’s cloud forest. These forests are exceptionally rich in flora and fauna, and represent the region's most bio-diverse ecosystems.
